Vass 2007

Well to be honest...
where can I start!!!

Manchester airport, to those who went, was a nervous time for all. On check in we discovered (to our dismay) that there was “no such flight number” - a great start to what should have been plain sailing. After about 20 mins of phone calls from the check in staff they finally checked us in.

The long and short of it yes....
The G8 HAS ITS OWN BOEING 737 all to themselves.

This left everyone on a high and in great spirits for the start of the holiday.

THE ARRIVAL....

Anyone who has been to Vass knows that it takes ages to clear Preveza and the transfer is usually approx 1hr +. Not this time.
We were greeted by not the usual reps and a bus, but by just two taxi’s ready to break the transfer speed record, so in no time at all we were at the Vassiliki resort of Sun, Waves and boasting a hot 30 degrees.

A quick look around the rigging area and a familiar sound was heard “alrite gaz” in a Birmingham accent - yes that’s right - STEVE PEACE - who was at Vass for the month doing an instructor fastrack course.

THE CONDITIONS...

The wind conditions at the start of the week were superb!! As most people know the wind at Vass is caused by a thermal called Eric normally starting about 3pm which is just about the right time to get over any hangovers.

There is also another condition of the thermal called Eric’s Beard which looks awesome, basically it’s when cloud backs up at the top of the mountain and runs the full length of the bay. When this happened on the Sunday there was an air of excitement from all the instructors and flying fish, when this happens its going to blow severe as the guys on the tandem were soon to find out sporting 16m2 (Mr cook and Mr Jones !!!).

The wind kicked in as forewarned by the instructors and several rescues were made by the superb staff at Vass. After recovering on the beach an instructor soon came back in and was heard saying, “I'm stacked on a 3.7m.” The wind was awesome and the swell was up to about a meter in height. A great day on the water in some form at least...

NIGHT LIFE...

I'm sure everyone has heard of the famous Zeus bar in Vassiliki town. There is also a few more bars that have sprung up in the past few years. To mention a few... Tunnel bar and the sports bar are a great place to meet and drink. Amstel, Mythos - or whatever Pete Rabjons can think of at the time (sorry Pete aka the barman!).

All the restaurants bar one were superb and great value. Meals normally work out to around 15 euro's for a meal, a few beers and a cheeky ouzo thrown in. Everyone had a great time with no unwanted incidents. I cant think of a better place to be.

NEWBIES...

One of the G8 had never sailed before and just planned on coming along for the ride. He took on board all the lessons and by the end of the week was beach starting and almost planing. He also tried out a 140 Tabou Rocket with a 7m sail! He is now thinking of joining our club and buying some kit. He for one will be going to Vass again (WELL DONE GAZ STRONG). So anyone thinking of going to Vass in the future but is a non windsurfer can go and learn in the perfect conditions with great tuition.

SUMMARY...

The weather was fantastic, the wind kicked in for most of the week, free mountain bike hire, great bars and restaurants - all for £253.00 a good time had by all!. Sorry to all those who missed out on a brilliant Vass trip, you really should have been there, but don’t worry too much cos were going again next year!
