Snowfer - Windsurfing on Snow and Ice! Snowfer is a combination of Snowboarding and Windsurfing - on boards with footstraps, edges and steering blades, and using entirely conventional windsurfing rigs, and very similar techniques - easier in some ways as the board shifts well in lighter winds and there is no 'tipping' effect due to the flat surface.
This is something we shall never be able to do at Long Eaton. You need a freeze long enough to make thick ice, and the world centre of ice windsurfing is Lake Simcoe near Toronto where the ice is 1-3 feet thick! You also need long distances for stopping and turning because you can get up to speed! Snowfering can be done on frozen lakes, but also on ski pistes of light incline. An adaptation of the Snowfer board also allows Kitesurfing. The Snowfer website is very comprehensive, including some entertaining videos. You can also surf on ice with a Kitewing, but the Snowfer looks more attractive to those who can already windsurf! As it's done in winter, you need warm clothing, but you definitely need gloves, elbow pads, and a motorcycling quality helmet (you could come off at 40mph, although you are on a smooth surface).
